Jill Scott's mom Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on 4 April 1972 located in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Scott was raised by her grandmother as an all-only daughter by her maternal grandmother. Scott studied at her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduating, she attended Temple University. Between two work, she studied secondary education. She was hoping to become a high-school English teacher. This dream however, ended up being a short-lived dream when she quit school after three years of studies and was an aide to teachers. A poet by trade, she began performing at live poetry recitals. Then she joined with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to create the group. You Got Me is the outcome of their collaboration. She came out during a Roots concert. Later, she secured collaborations artists like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. Additionally, she gained experience as an actor in her participation in the Canada stage of the Broadway musical Rent. She was the first signed artist for label Hidden Beach Recordings label.
